The order that Hannah's mother used to get over the border from occupied to unoccupied France. | |
In late 1941, we and many Jews in France were trying to get to the US. Like many of the others we were constantly put off. (This State Department stalling strategy has since been exposed). This photo of Hannah taken for a passport which her parents were hoping to get. Her dress, and Eva's (below), were made by Hannah's grandmother. |

Passport photo of Hannah's sister Eva. She had been very ill with the flu (pre-penicillin) and almost died, and she looks quite troubled in the picture. |

The first of several photos from
Marseilles, taken between 1940 and 1942. The family spent a few years in Marseilles,
and still had a camera then. This photo shows the girls in their backyard. |

Hannah and Eva with their two
grandmothers. The older woman (Hannah's fathers mother) did not live with
them but was visiting when this was taken. She was 69 when she crossed the border to
Switzerland with Hannah's parents. Marseilles, 1940-42. |

This is the final Marseilles picture. It shows Hannah's parents coming from Synagogue on Rosh Hashona (probably 1941). The suit Hannah's mother is wearing was made by a local seamstress. It was made out of one of Hannah's father's old suits. |
