Shattered Crystals - Photos

Sal and Mia Kanner, in central France, Spring 1941

In 1941 my father, Sal, had already been interned and gotten out of three camps, Buchenwald in Germany and Damini and Gurs in France. My sisters and I were being cared for at Chateau Montintin, a home for displaced Jewish children run by the Oeuvre de Secours aux Enfants [OSE] in Central France, where our mother was the cook. Our father found us there and became the home's handyman. This picture was taken in front of La Chevrette, the building where Orthodox children stayed.

In 2004, I returned to La Chevrette, and was photographed on these same steps (see those photos).
